Chicago Vs New York Pizza
69What type of Pizza is best?
I understand there has been a debate for sometime now about which type of pizza is better. Chicago pizza which is the deep dish kind is really a meal unto itself. Mind you, I have only been through Chicago on one occasion, but my wife does have friends living in the Windy City, so I will be having more than ample opportunity to sample the best Chicago pizza there is. Here are some Chicago Pizza questions that I want to get answered first hand.
- What exactly is a Chicago Style Pizza?
- Where and when did the first Chicago pizza originate?
- Where and when did the debate about NY Vs Chicago pizza begin?
- Are there any Windy city natives that prefer NY style pizza?
- Can you get NY style pizza in Chicago?
- Where are some of the best Chicago pizza joints?
I do have a basic understanding of what Chicago Pizza is, but I must admit my current experiences of eating it has mainly been limited to Pizzaria Uno or frozen pizza that proclaims to be Chicago style. So as of this writing, I really think I need to educate myself in the way of Chicago pizza so that I can determine for myself which pizza, NY or Chicago, I prefer.
Consulting with Lizzie, my wife, she has just agreed to set up a trip to visit her friend Cat. Lizzie says that on one of her trips to the Windy City, she had the most unusual pizza she has ever had. [will insert name] was so crowded that she said they waited for hours. She was told that the pizza was made by placing a ball of dough into the dish that the pan was made in all made to order. Sounds like I may be making another movie for my restaurant review blog Thegrubhound.com.
What Chicago pizza do you recommend I indulge in during our upcoming Chicago trip?

A lot of people call deep dish "Chicago style," but people who actually live here are used to the more commonly consumed type of pizza, which is thin crust, usually with sausage, cut into small squares. It's almost like eating pizza on a cracker, but it's good, and the cheese is very thick. Totally different from national chain pizza or frozen pizza, and very different from deep dish. Lots of people like deep dish, too, but it's more common to eat the thin crust. You should be able to get it anywhere in Chicago.
Can't say I know too much about New York pizza....
New York style is my favorite! Plus, it's just knowing that you are eating something so world renowned.
